J-1 Exchange Visitor Eligibility Requirements: Students, teachers, professors, research scholars, people with specialized skills, international visitors, foreign medical graduate students, other medically related programs, business and industrial trainers, interns, employees of the International Communication Agency, Research assistants, government visitors, camp counselors, and au pairs qualify for the J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa if they have been already accepted into a specific exchange visitor program approved by the United States Department of State (DOS) through its Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA). The applicant must have enough money to cover expenses while in the United States and have a sufficient proficiency in the English language to be able to participate in the program of interest.
J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa Additional Information: Once an applicant receives his or her Certificate of Eligibility from their respective DOS-approved institution, he or she will know the list of dates they are expected to be participating in the program. Visa holders are only authorized to remain in the United States until the final date indicated on the certificate. How long the holder is allowed to stay in the country depends on the type of program he or she plans to participate in.
